Ongoing legislative issues

Charity Commission - Compulsory registration of charities

  • Colleges NI has been called forward for registration with the Charities Commission. CNI submitted their application in Oct 2014 and we are awaiting the outcome.
  • One College is being called forward as a pilot - to examine if all colleges have to register with the Charities Commission.
  • For each tranche the Charity Commission is organising workshops to explain what is required and this includes a demonstration of the online application system. SERC submitted their application in Oct 2014 and we are awaiting the outcome.

NI Assembly - Proposals for a NI Public Services Ombudsman Bill                                                                   

  • There are proposals going through the NI Assembly to widen the powers of the Ombudsman to cover public services which would include the 6 regional FE Colleges. Therefore unresolved complaints within a college could be brought to the Ombudsman to deal with. See NI Public Services Ombudsman

  • The NIPSO Bill passed Royal Assent in February 2016.
