Northern Ireland strike Gold in Birmingham Posted on 20/11/2017 00:00:00 Students from Northern Ireland have brought home sixteen medals from the biggest skills competition in the UK including six golds and four silver medals.

The Skills Show has 500 competitors from across the UK competing across five areas including Media & Creative and IT software. 

Forty students from Northern Ireland competed and again have achieved massive success by taking home 16 Medals in total, 6 Gold, 4 Silver, 7 Bronze and 5 highly commended. This means that Northern Ireland walked away with is over 10% of all the medals available in the competition. 

Southern Regional College was second in the medal league table with a haul of 5 medals including two Gold in Forensic Science and Media Makeup. 

This success is a testament to the talents of FE College staff and students in Northern Ireland and the skills acquired from professional and technical training at an FE college.

In addition, during the Awards Ceremony, 145 young people were named for the WorldSkills UK Squad.  These students will train and compete further during the year and the best performing will be selected for Team UK to take part in WorldSkills 2019 in Kazan.  Twenty young people from Northern Ireland have been selected as part of UK Squad.  The full list can be found here -  Kazan 2019 Squad

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the SkillsShow 2017. Even though the event is now complete and the medal board has been revealed. This is a great opportunity for Northern Ireland to reflect and continue to build on the excellence demonstrated by all the competitors. Northern Ireland should feel very proud of such an inspiring performance.
