Northern Ireland is going for gold at UK Skills Show Posted on 15/11/2017 00:00:00 The Skills Show is the UK’s largest skills and careers event and is designed to reward talent and recognise the levels of expertise in apprenticeships, skills and further education.

The Skills Show has 500 competitors from across the UK competing across five areas including Media & Creative and IT software. Forty students from Northern Ireland are competing and hope to match the success from the 2016 UK Skills Show whereby NI competitors brought home brought home six gold, four silver, five bronze medals and four high commendations.

Brian Doran, Chief Executive, Southern Regional College, has 14 competitors in this year's Skills Show which represents the second highest cohort of competitors from any FE college across the UK. Mr. Doran said “Colleges Northern Ireland and its member Colleges are delighted to participate in the UK Skills Show.  Involvement at the Skills Show is an excellent opportunity for the FE sector to raise their profile, showcase talent and highlight the world-class professional and technical provision available in Northern Ireland”.

Marie Therese McGivern, a board member at WorldSkills UK and CEO Principal at Belfast Metropolitan College said, “The Northern Ireland FE colleges have again sent a brilliant team to this year’s UK Skills Show in Birmingham. While only 3% of UK population we makeup 10% of the competitors and over a third of NI competitors have achieved medals in since 2014. This is a magnificent showcase for the talents of FE college staff and students in Northern Ireland and the skills acquired from professional and technical training at an FE college.”
